Twist Rate

A 5.56 barrel's fast twist is built for heavier centerfire bullets, so .22LR accuracy is only fair through it. A dedicated .22LR barrel (commonly around 1:16) is tuned for the light rimfire bullet and groups far tighter.

Ammo Selection

Rimfire cycling is picky. High-velocity .22LR generally runs most reliably, especially during break-in. Copper-plated rounds also help keep lead fouling down compared to bare-lead bullets.

Cleaning

.22LR is dirty. Kits and uppers that disassemble easily save time and last longer. If you run a conversion kit through your 5.56 barrel, clean the barrel and chamber well before switching back to centerfire.

Bolt Hold-Open

Most .22LR AR magazines do not lock the bolt open on an empty mag. Plan to count your rounds, or feel for the click, rather than relying on the bolt catch.

Piston Guns
