AR-15 Complete Upper Receivers

Assembled, headspaced and ready to run. NSPEC Innovations builds complete AR-15 uppers in 5.56 NATO, .223 Wylde, 300 Blackout, 6mm ARC and more, from compact 7.5-inch pistol uppers to faithful MK16 URGI and MK12 clone builds. Pin one onto any mil-spec lower and go. And because an upper is not a firearm, it ships straight to your door with no FFL.

Buy It Built

Skip The Build, Not The Quality

A complete upper is the fastest, most reliable way to get shooting. Every unit ships assembled with the barrel, gas system, handguard and muzzle device installed and torqued to spec, so there are no barrel nuts to time, no gas blocks to align and no special tools required. Pin it to your completed lower and the rifle is ready.

Running more than one upper on a single lower is where the AR-15 platform shines. Keep a 16-inch 5.56 for range days, a suppressed 300 Blackout for quiet work, and a clone build for the collection, all sharing one serialized lower. Swapping takes seconds with two takedown pins.

Shop By Build Type

Find Your Configuration

Our uppers are grouped by how people actually shop for them: by caliber, by mission, and by clone spec. Start with the role you have in mind and narrow from there.

01

5.56 & .223 Wylde

The everyday workhorse. 5.56 NATO handles range, defense and general use and safely fires .223 Remington. A .223 Wylde chamber squeezes out better accuracy while still running both. Look for 16-inch M4 and 18-inch options with M-LOK handguards.

02

300 Blackout & Suppressed Builds

Purpose-built for short barrels and cans. 300 Blackout reaches full velocity from a short barrel, which makes it ideal for compact, suppressed and home-defense uppers. Pair it with a matching bolt and a quality can.

03

Clone-Correct Builds

For the purists. We assemble faithful MK16 URGI and MK12 clone uppers with the right barrels, rails and muzzle devices (Geissele MK14 rails, SilencerCo ASR and AAC 51T mounts), plus classic M16A4 rifle kits. Spec-correct, not just spec-adjacent.

04

Specialty Calibers & Pistol Uppers

Beyond the standards. Reach for a 6mm ARC upper for efficient long range, a .22 Magnum heavy barrel for cheap precision, or a short 7.5-inch Kitty Kat pistol upper for the most compact 5.56 build we make.

Spec Your Upper

Barrel Length

16 inches is the do-everything standard: no tax stamp on a rifle and accurate well past 300 yards. 7.5 to 11.5 inches suits compact pistol and SBR builds and close quarters. 18 to 20 inches maximizes velocity for precision and hunting. Under 16 inches on a rifle requires an SBR stamp, or build it as a pistol.

Gas System

Length tunes how the rifle cycles. Carbine is the proven short-barrel standard, mid-length softens recoil on 16-inch 5.56 builds, and rifle-length runs smoothest on 18 to 20 inch barrels. Complete uppers arrive with the gas system already matched to the barrel.

Caliber

5.56 NATO is the versatile all-rounder and shoots .223. .223 Wylde adds accuracy while running both. 300 Blackout owns short and suppressed builds. Specialty options like 6mm ARC and 7.62x39 cover long range and low-cost plinking.

Handguard & Rail

A free-float M-LOK handguard improves accuracy and gives you the most mounting room for lights, lasers and sights. Leave a couple of inches past the muzzle so there is room for a suppressor when you add one.

BCG & Charging Handle

Some uppers include the bolt carrier group and charging handle, and some do not. Confirm on the product page. If they are not included, add a caliber-correct BCG and a charging handle so the upper is ready to fire out of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need an FFL to buy an AR-15 upper receiver?

No. An AR-15 upper receiver is not a firearm under federal law, so complete uppers ship directly to your door with no FFL transfer and no paperwork. Note that barrels and high-capacity magazines require a valid FFL dealer address to ship to CA, WA, CT, NJ and the cities of New York and Chicago, and some products cannot ship to certain states regardless of FFL status.

  • What comes on a complete AR-15 upper receiver?

A complete (barreled) upper arrives assembled with the upper receiver, barrel, gas system, gas block, handguard and muzzle device installed. Most also include the forward assist and dust cover. Check each listing to confirm whether a bolt carrier group and charging handle are included, since some uppers ship with them and some do not.

  • Will a complete upper fit my lower receiver?

Any mil-spec AR-15 complete upper pins onto any mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver using the takedown and pivot pins. This cross-compatibility is what lets you run several uppers on a single lower. Large-frame AR-10 and AR-308 lowers use a different pattern and are not compatible with AR-15 uppers.

  • What barrel length should I choose for an AR-15 upper?

16 inches is the most popular length: it needs no tax stamp on a rifle and stays accurate past 300 yards. Shorter barrels (7.5 to 11.5 inches) are ideal for compact pistol and SBR builds and close quarters, while 18 to 20 inch barrels maximize velocity and accuracy for precision and hunting. Barrels under 16 inches on a rifle require an SBR tax stamp, or must be built as a pistol.

  • Which gas system length do I need?

Match the gas system to the barrel. Pistol-length gas suits the shortest barrels, carbine-length is the standard for 16 inch and shorter barrels, mid-length smooths recoil on 16 inch builds, and rifle-length runs best on 18 to 20 inch barrels. Complete uppers ship with the gas system already installed and tuned to the barrel.

  • What is the difference between 5.56, .223 Wylde and 300 Blackout uppers?

5.56 NATO is the versatile all-rounder and safely fires .223 Remington. A .223 Wylde chamber is tuned to shoot both 5.56 and .223 with better accuracy. 300 Blackout is optimized for short barrels and suppressed shooting. Each caliber requires a matching barrel and bolt, which is why buying a complete upper removes the guesswork.
