Bear Creek Arsenal BC-22 â AR-15 .22 Magnum (WMR) Complete Upper Receiver with Right Side Charger
The Bear Creek Arsenal BC-22 is a complete AR-15 upper assembly chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR / .22 Magnum). It drops onto any mil-spec AR-15 lower with an unnotched (rounded) hammer, giving AR owners access to the .22 Magnum cartridge's increased velocity and energy over .22 LR without a dedicated rifle. The 16-inch parkerized heavy barrel, blowback operating system, and included Gen 2 right-side charging handle make this a purpose-built .22 WMR upper, not a conversion kit.

Operating System
The BC-22 uses a straight blowback operating system rather than the direct impingement or piston gas systems found on centerfire AR-15 uppers. Blowback is the standard operating method for rimfire AR-style uppers because .22 WMR is a rimfire cartridge and cannot be reliably fired with a firing pin and gas system designed for centerfire ammunition. The blowback system cycles the bolt carrier using chamber pressure alone, without a gas tube, gas block, or piston. This simplifies the design and reduces maintenance points, but it also means the upper must be used with the specific buffer and buffer spring included in the kit â standard AR-15 buffer weights are not compatible and will cause cycling failures.
Right-Side Charging Handle
The Gen 2 right-side charging handle replaces the traditional rear-positioned T-handle with a side-mounted charging handle on the right side of the upper receiver. This moves the charging action closer to the shooter's dominant hand on a standard right-handed shooter, eliminating the reach required to grasp the rear charging handle while keeping the rifle shouldered. The Gen 2 design is patent-protected and has an updated geometry over the original Gen 1 side charger. Note that the standard AR-15 dust cover and forward assist are not functional on this upper due to the right-side charging configuration.
Lower Compatibility and Hammer Requirement
This upper is compatible with any mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver, but the lower's hammer must be unnotched â meaning a rounded hammer face, not the standard notched centerfire AR hammer. Most .22 LR conversion lowers ship with an unnotched hammer, and dedicated .22 WMR AR lowers include the correct hammer. If you are using a standard AR-15 lower built for centerfire calibers, the existing notched hammer will need to be replaced with an unnotched (rounded) hammer before this upper will function correctly.
If you are building a dedicated .22 WMR AR rather than swapping onto an existing lower, a complete lower configured specifically for .22 WMR is the most reliable approach since all components will be matched from the start.
Magazine Note
Magazines are not included with this upper. The BC-22 requires .22 WMR-specific magazines designed for AR-style .22 Magnum uppers. Standard AR-15 magazines in 5.56, .223, or other centerfire calibers are not compatible. If using this upper on a mil-spec AR-style lower that was originally built for centerfire calibers, a special magazine adapter is also required to allow .22 WMR magazines to seat correctly. A dedicated .22 WMR AR lower eliminates the need for an adapter.
Buffer and Spring Requirement
The carbine-length buffer and buffer spring included with this upper are tuned specifically for the blowback operating system and the .22 WMR cartridge's pressure curve. Do not substitute a different buffer or spring. Running a heavier centerfire AR-15 buffer will result in short-cycling failures. Running a lighter buffer can cause over-cycling and potential damage. Use only the included buffer and spring with this upper.
